Don’t let sex talks turn you off
Whether it’s with your spouse or yourself, sex plays a big role in your physical, mental, and spiritual wellness.
We at a Curvy Mom believe that sex shouldn’t be a taboo subject, but one that is healthily explored as it’s important to understand all the ways your self-care can be affected by it.
This is a safe space to discuss those sex topics you might not be ready to bring up with your spouse or friends. Welcome, sis!
Each month, we’ll speak with Sarah Manna, Meditation, Reiki, and Holistic Health Coach, who is an expert at coaching women and moms through meditation practices to heal stress and anxiety and boost your confidence going forward.
Let’s dive in!
What does a healthy sex life look like?
Libido looks different for every mom. Whether you’re a new mother in your postpartum period, or your kids are toddlers or older, making the time to learn your body after having your children and how it functions takes time.
It’s normal if your sex drive is through the roof or if you’re not in the mood to be touched at all. The only thing that matters is if you are satisfied with your sex life, which varies for every mom.
In reality, the state of your sex life is determined by your mindset—and that’s where self-care and meditation comes into play.
“Self-care and sexual health go hand in hand. When we feel stressed and overwhelmed, it’s hard to just switch off and feel comfortable with intimacy and in the mood. Meditation is a successful tool to use to improve your health [sexual and otherwise],” says Sarah. “It improves your immune system and your overall health, as well as brings you more peace.”
If you’re dealing with emotions that rock your peace, like anxiety, depression, and stress, you’ll notice your sexual wellness will take a hit along with your mental wellness. Sarah recommends looking inward to uncover the root of the problem.
“In today’s society, women are more stressed than ever before. We wear so many hats throughout the day that it can be very hard to unwind and practice intimacy when it’s time for it,”
Sarah says. “There are immediate physical and mental benefits from meditating [as it] teaches you a way to deal with these difficulties.”
3 tips to start improving your self-care
Because self-care and sexual health are linked, Sarah advises her clients to practice these three tips to start meditating and working away those negative emotions that hinder our wellness.
Get comfortable in your skin
“Meditation to learn how to build confidence [is vital],” Sarah says. We know as moms our bodies change and that can lead to insecurities about how we look. However, remember that you are beautiful as you are—and how you feel about your body impacts how you feel about exploring intimacy.
Sleep Well and Eat Good
Staying healthy by getting a full night’s rest and including colorful foods in your diet is key to just about everything in life, but it’s especially important for your self-care.
Once you get your children to bed, make a habit of putting your phone or laptop away to wind down as well and get more sleep.
And when it comes to your diet, make sure you’re staying hydrated and eating foods rich in vitamins. You’ll be surprised how good you feel when you take care of your body!
Move your Body
Speaking of taking care of your body, working out is essential for self-care and sexual health.
Get in tune with your body by stretching, dancing, or doing workouts like Pilates or yoga to improve your cardio, flexibility and feel good about your body.
