4 Easy Tips for Maintaining Your Business… while Employed!

I have always been passionate about being my own boss, but with lifestyle needs and demands it makes it hard to start out, but not impossible. Being currently employed and managing my own digital media marketing business I have picked up a few tips as how to manage both.

1. Find a full-time gig that is flexible and you can leave your stress at the office. Since your own gig will most likely be run from your house, it’s important to have space and separation from the two jobs. Find a full-time job with set hours and one you can commute to and from. Once you’re past your out time, that is it. Don’t think about that job until you are back the next day. This will allow you to focus your attention when you are home and working on your personal business.

2. Maximize your time. Since you will be working well over 40 hours it is important for you to maximize the work you do. If you have a long travel day, make sure you set yourself up for success by having “non-internet” things you can work on (writing, creating graphics, editing, reading, etc). In the same respect, plan days that you will not do any work. This is equally important!

3. Create “To Do” lists and check them off as you go. This will allow you not to forget tasks, and you can accomplish them in order of urgency.

4. Don’t be afraid to promote yourself. Add your personal business to your LinkedIn profile, and make yourself business cards. If your boss asks about your side business, don’t be afraid to tell him or her about it. As long as you’re not doing it at the office or on company time, you are in the right and should be proud. If anything, it shows how much of a go-getter you are!
