A lot of times, the media tries to portray women as bickering, selfish, materialistic individuals. For some reason, society has decided to stigmatize women and say we do not work as hard as men, that we’re not as intelligent, and that we’re hard to get along with in the workplace. If you were to ask my opinion, I would say this is absolutely false! Of course, I have met women who weren’t the easiest to get along with but usually I surround myself with beautiful, positive women. I’m so glad to include Khara Campbell in this category! She is a true gem from the Bahamas, and, most important, she knows her worth. I value the fact that she stays true to her morals and faith, because a lot of people find it easier to conform to society’s norms. Not only is she a graduate of Midland University, a wonderful mother, and a fabulous wife, but she’s also a phenomenal writer. I had the pleasure of asking Khara a few questions and her responses were truly inspiring. I hope her answers will inspire you guys too.
What type of books do you write? Why did you decide to write in this genre?
I write romance, and Christian and children’s fiction. I didn’t particularly choose a genre, I just write whatever comes to mind and it takes on a life of it’s own whether romance, Christian fiction, etc.
I’ve been writing since I was around ten years old. I picked it up again around age nineteen. It was placed on the back burner shortly after, then about seven years ago I started back up full force.
What’s the hardest struggle for you as a writer?
Hmmm . . . Promoting my books and myself as a writer is something I find challenging at times. Some people think once you’re published the hard work is done. In some ways it has only just begun.
When you’re not busy writing or working in general, what do you like to do for a hobby?
Actually I’m going to start yoga again. It’s been years since I’ve done it, but I want to get back into it. I also like to draw. I’m no Picasso, but I find it therapeutic.
Does music inspire your creativity? If so, what type of music is your favorite? Who are your favorite artists?
I love all types of music and it does inspire my creativity. I’ve used music in many of my books. My favorite genres are reggae, hip-hop, R&B, Christian, but pretty much anything that captures my attention. I’m going to say that my favorite artist is whom I have downloaded the most on my phone—Kirk Franklin.
Who is your favorite author?
Gosh, I’ve got soooooooooo many. But just to give you an idea I like Maureen Smith, Love Belvin, Neta Jackson, and Michelle Stimpson, just to name a few.
What’s your number one goal pertaining to your career as a writer? Have you achieved it?
I want to continue writing stories that readers enjoy and can relate to. I would also like to branch off into TV, movie, or even drama writing. That’s something I’m still working on.
What do you feel is your overall purpose as a writer?
As a writer I not only want to entertain readers with my stories and characters, but I also want them to take something positive away from the experience that they can apply to their lives. From feedback I’ve received, I do believe I’ve achieved that.
Are you ever influenced by news stories? If so, how do you tie in breaking news or popular scandals into your plotlines? Share a news story that has affected you personally or one that you find interesting.
I am influenced by news stories; however, I don’t always write about them. Sometimes people just want a break from all the mess reported on TV. I do find real-life situations that I apply to my stories to add drama and suspense but I try not to make it too heavy. All the news stories about black men being killed at the hands of police officers is something that is hard not to be affected by, especially being a black mother to a black son and daughters.
Do you have any upcoming books or future projects you would like to share with our readers?
Yes. Part two of my novel Can’t Love What I Don’t Trust will be released August 5. I’m excited about that. I’m also busy writing up a storm, so stay tuned for other books in the near future.
