4 Simple Tips for Personal Development

With 2014 coming to a close, many will take this time to reflect on the highs and lows of the past year and set resolutions for the new one. The following quote (author unknown) provides an interesting perspective on setting New Year’s goals—“Don’t worry about resolutions. Be better than you were yesterday, every day.” This quote challenges us to step into a better version of ourselves every day of the year, not just each January. Self-improvement is an ongoing process, so here are some techniques to keep you engaged daily in your personal development!

  1. Write a list of five positive affirmations to repeat aloud each morning to kick-start your day. Two great ones are: “I am successful in all that I do” and “I am attracting happiness and positivity into my life.” There are also numerous free and subscription mobile apps that allow you to record and playback your personal affirmations.

  1. Carve out time to disconnect from work and personal chaos, even if only for fifteen or twenty minutes. Go for a brief walk or run; get a quick massage; read a chapter in a new book, or whatever relaxes you, don’t answer any phone calls or check emails!

  1.  Practice the art of listening. Take the time to hear another person’s perspective or story without reacting immediately if you don’t agree. Actively listening and absorbing different opinions builds empathy and patience.

  1. End the day strong before bed by considering at least one thing you’re grateful for.
