Could you be the next Issa Rae or Shonda Rhimes?

Issa Rae or Shonda Rhimes

So you want to be a blogger in 2018?

. . . and become famous doing it!

Blogging is no longer a nerdy creative person hiding behind their computer. To be a success you have to share who you are, what you wear, about your relationship if you’re in one, about your kids if you have any, etc. Blogging has become a platform for your opinions, opinions about anything and everything, from personal interests to what’s trending.

But before you begin blogging, ask yourself: Am I ready to share my life with the world?

I learned the answer to this question the hard way. When I started the Virgo Girl about four years ago, I wanted to develop an informative platform where I shared experiences and knowledge, how-to tips and how to create a profitable business. While this is great, it became too technical and it honestly wasn’t what my audience wanted to hear about. Yes, the information was good, but the packaging was . . . ughh, what’s that word again? Oh yeah, so technical!

There are plenty of websites and blogs to tell you how to be the best blogger, how to grow your social media accounts, but what separates me, you, and anyone else from offering the same advice is your personal experience added to the subject matter.

If you follow popular bloggers, and you should have about five to ten that you do, if even for no more than research purposes, you will see that what they all have in common is their unique ability to be themselves and put their own personal spin on their posts.

The Internet is the wave of the future, creating online stars practically overnight. No longer are stars found by walking into an agency or recording studio, or getting your work published with top-notch publishers. No, they are made right from the comfort of your own home at your computer.

Don’t believe me? I’m sure you’ve heard of plus-size blogger Gabi Fresh who started with a personal blog in 2008. Outside of many fashion collaborations, Swimsuits for All and Playful Promises to name just two, she also has her own plus-size fashion line, Premme, and I just saw her on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, as she has partnered with Khloe’s Good American Jeans.

Beauty blogger Christina Brown of Love Brown Sugar has also taken her brand from behind the laptop to a national commercial with Dove. I don’t think there is a beauty brand that you’ve heard of that she hasn’t worked with. Outside of brand partnerships, Christina hosts several events throughout the year that continues to not only expand her bank account but her brand awareness as well.

So, are you up for the challenge of becoming the next Issa Rae or Shonda Rhimes? Can you commit to sharing your personal life, flaws and all, and your TRUE unfiltered opinions? Can you commit to your blog despite having to go to work the next morning, feed the kids, travel to football practice on weekends, and other life obligations? Are you willing to postpone date night because a trending topic just hit the circuits and you have to report on it?
