We are so excited to partner with Dr. Walter Hidalgo with a goal of being more socially aware. Here, he answers your questions and shares advice on life and wellness while living in a social media-driven world.
DEAR THE VIRGO GIRL,
I met someone on Tinder two years ago and we have chatted daily since we connected. I live in California and he lives in New York. Unfortunately, he lost his job this past summer and has hit a financial low, but I really want to spend some face to face time with him. I am debating paying for a flight and hotel to give him a surprise first visit, but I don’t want to be in for a surprise upon my arrival! We speak every-day via FaceTime, plus I have done all the basic vetting online. But I’m still uncertain of what I am in store for when I arrive. Should I take the chance and fly out there? Or should I tell him my plans?
Advice from Dr. Walter Hidalgo: Like anything else in life, we take chances. In this scenario, I feel you already have the answer (even if you don’t like it). The question is, is this worth it? Is this good for my soul which consist of time, love, energy and hope (among other things). We can never predict the future but we can have some say in the present. I personally think you should be honest with him about `your trip and your feelings/thoughts. It’s been said that about 90% of our communication is unspoken (boy language says it all). Ergo, getting out of the internet medium and meeting in person with verbal confirmation is needed. One can only hope that whatever that person is going through that it will pass so you need be realistic about your situation and meet him (and yourself) halfway in order to not add further hindrance on you (or him). Remember, we live in the real world and the internet is only a medium for temporary use. That is to say, are you willing to commit to him when the real world confronts you both?
