Ask the Virgo Girl: Stay-at-Home while Starting an Etsy Jewelry Business

Stay-at-Home while Starting an Etsy Jewelry Business

We are so excited to partner with Dr. Walter Hidalgo with a goal of being more socially aware. Here, he answers your questions and shares advice on life and wellness while living in a social media driven world.

DEAR THE VIRGO GIRL,

I’m a mom of four boys and a wife of fifteen years. I love my children and my husband but lately I have been feeling that they aren’t enough. I started a jewelry business on Etsy and its doing very well. But I can admit my home-life and priorities have shifted. I no longer care about PTA meetings, packing school lunches or ironing my husband clothes. I feel myself becoming more alive and contributing to society. However, I can’t help from feeling guilty because I promised my husband that I would be the primary caregiver for our boys while he climbed the corporate ladder. I tried to talk to him about it but he dismisses the idea saying that it’s too late we already made this agreement.  I don’t know what to do?

Advice from Dr. Walter Hidalgo: There is a saying that every 7 years we change and what you’re doing is, changing (and that’s okay).  This can also be a challenge if you’re in a committed relationship, because if your partner is not accepting of your change or is in defiance of your change it can cause problems within your relationship.  However, because I am a big advocate of living your life purposefully, I recommend that you find a way to fulfill that life endeavor.  You may want to start with doing something part-time until you are able to hire people, including a babysitter.  Being a stay-at-home mom (or dad) is a job and having more than one job is common.  So, your hours may look different then your husbands, because you are venturing into the world of entrepreneurship and that is no easy task.  At the same time, I believe your partner should be a little more understanding because a robust relationship is one where the work, dream and task(s) is shared equally – especially since he had a head start on his dreams/endeavors.  If he is in the corporate world then he understand business and so I recommend approaching him from a business perspective by way of finding a way to negotiate, sacrifice and support each other’s dreams/next stages of your lives.
