Here, she shares advice on all things business.
DEAR THE VIRGO GIRL,
I turned 35 years old yesterday and I know I’m having a midlife crisis over my work life. I’m a personal assistant for an asshole lawyer that treats me like I’m his personal slave twenty-four seven. I’m completely unhappy and I have no friends or husband, due to my demanding boss. I woke up today listening to the radio and I envisioned what my life would have been like if I would have pursued my dream of being a radio host. I have decided to go after my dream even in my late thirties, but I have no idea where to begin and if I should quit my job or start small. Any advice would be helpful. P.S. Love what you all are doing with this series; it is so amazing for women all around the world to have a safe place to open up and chat anonymously.
Advice from Missy: Thank you so much for your support, we at the Virgo Girl really appreciate it. I’m super thrilled to hear that you are ready to pursue your passion. My first questions would be where are you located and is there a big market for radio hosts in your area? Do your homework and research the radio stations, the genres. Which genre are you interested in? Do you want to host a full show or only be a co-host or do special features?
As for quitting your job I wouldn’t do that just yet, as getting into this field can be hard at any age, but I definitely don’t see a full-time salary happening overnight just yet. Time to do your groundwork. Once you’ve established a plan of what kind of radio host you want to be, check out internships, possibly take a few classes in public speaking, voice-overs, acting, and/or communications. You may have to enter the field through the back door, working as something else before landing your dream role.
Given that you have PA experience you could potentially apply to be an office manager or another administrative role. I know this isn’t what you want at the moment, but you are able to work in the industry, gain experience and knowledge, and potentially find a mentor there. The good news, though, if you’re impatient and want to act now, is that you can always start your own podcast.
