Conferences, Symposiums, and Workshops, OH MY!

That résumé from college need updating? Researching careers in non-profit? Or looking to network at an upcoming event? Websites like The Muse or LinkedIn offer volumes of advice to improve yourself and your career. However, trolling the endless advice columns can be overwhelming. So instead of funneling years of career guidance into one article we investigated the benefits of attending professional conferences, symposiums, and workshops.

Conference: This formal event is typically held over several days and hosted by relevant keynote speakers addressing trends and innovations in their industry. Depending on your affiliation with the organization (i.e., member, non-member, business owner, student, etc.) you might qualify for a discounted admission ticket. Professionals at every level attend these, so there’s endless opportunity to get out there and connect.

Symposiums: Consider these smaller, more casual conferences. They happen in a single day and elaborate on a single subject. Similar to conferences, they attract quality thought leaders in the field but in fewer numbers. Regardless of the size there’s plenty of opportunity to strike up a conversation with a potential client/employer over the free wine and cheese.

Workshops: These small hands-on classes are designed to be more interactive and focus on a specific topic and/or skill. Since workshops are more intimate, you’ll be able to speak one-on-one with the instructor/speaker.
