DEAR THE VIRGO GIRL,

My dream is to become a freelance photographer and work with wedding and event planners. I wanted to start my business this year, but I still have many things to pay off. I need to work at the moment but I feel depressed each day going to work and not being able to do what I love. I’m afraid to launch my photography business and not be able to commit 100 percent. Can I do both and be successful?

Advice from Missy: Hi, Creative Bug. To answer your question, yes, you can absolutely be successful in your business and still have your job. Start slow. Build your website and portfolio. These are things you can do during the evening and on weekends. During your lunch break, go outside and take pictures for your social media pages. Build your audience up slowly, before you take the plunge and officially launch.

Network, network, network. Being a wedding and event photographer is a very lucrative business, but you have to be in it to win it. Order some business cards; Moo has some lovely creative ones. Then get to attending wedding shows and events throughout your area. Save your PTO and sick leave at work for when you really need it. Once you’ve set up your portfolio, website, social pages and received your business cards, tell your family, friends, and coworkers. Tell them the truth: you’re taking on weekend and evening projects.
