Serena Williams has retired after dominating tennis for years. This is how you can dominate your goals, too!
There’s something about a Black woman going after her dreams despite her critics and the odds. Serena Williams is a prime example of never letting anyone or anything hold you back from being a boss. After an iconic 27-year career, Serena has decided to retire and explore her other passions. We know she’s going to dominate whatever she puts her mind to—and we’ll show you how you can, too, mama!
Living life as a legend
Serena’s love of tennis started at the age of 14 alongside her sister, Venus Williams. If you’ve seen King Richard (the award-winning movie that depicts Serena’s late father, Richard Williams, encouraging his daughters to embrace the sport), you’ll know that she’s been a beast on the court since 1995.
Her pure talent and drive to excel at the predominantly white sport as a Black woman broke boundaries and earned her 23 Grand Slam single titles…which is more than any tennis player, woman or man, has ever won.
While we can go on and on about Serena’s accomplishments (like her 858 tour victories and three Olympic golds), it’s important to recognize that she remained a high achiever even during challenging times in her life.
Balancing work with personal issues
Serena’s strength is truly inspiring! It’s not unusual to succumb under pressure sometimes, and Serena is not immune to stress. However, we can’t help but admire how she handled herself to protect herself.
In September 2017, Serena gave birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. However, “everything went bad” according to Serena shortly after her first child was born by C-section.
Serena has a medical history of dealing with blood clots and takes blood thinners each day to hinder the chance of them forming. Yet she had to quit taking them as she healed from her C-section. This proved to be an issue as Serena began feeling shortness of breath and rushed to find her nurse to treat her with heparin and a CT scan to check for blood clots.
The nurse didn’t listen and instead ordered Serena an ultrasound which did nothing to help.
Serena could have been one of these women until she demanded her heparin IV and CT scan…which revealed clots forming in her lungs.
Thankfully they gave her the medication and surgery she needed to recover, but only after Serena fought for her voice to be heard.
Retiring on top of the mountain
“It’s been a fun ride. It’s been the most incredible ride and journey I’ve ever been on,” Serena said during her speech after her final tennis match at Arthur Ashe Stadium in California.
Serena hinted at retirement being on the horizon earlier this year when she wrote an essay for Vogue magazine, stating that she had mixed feelings about leaving the sport that gave her so much. But she realized it was time to give her body a rest and spend more time with her daughter and family.
While walking away from your passion can be challenging, Serena can hold her head high knowing she commanded the tennis court unlike any other. We’re looking forward to what she’ll do next!
