How to plan a unique and FAST holiday

The holidays are officially here and boy did they sneak up on us! If you are a last-minute planner (and that is TOTALLY fine), we have some quick but unique tips for you to host your holiday visitors.

The Set-up

Who says you need to have a real traditional Christmas tree? Play around with bright ornaments and lights (see here for alternative trees to try from HGTV). We also suggest that you scatter holiday-scented candles throughout your house. Don’t forget the music! Here are our favorite songs to add to your holiday playlist:

“I’ll Be Home for Christmas” by Kelly Clarkson
“Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” by U2
“Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)” by Elvis Presley
“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Keyshia Cole
“This Christmas” by CeeLo Green
“Wonderful Christmastime” by Paul McCartney

The Menu

Take simple chips and dip and put them into fun bowls—this will add a little homemade touch, rather than serving them right out of the jars! Use your Crock-Pot! You can do all the prep the night before, and just turn it on in the morning. Here is a GREAT main-course recipe:

Three pounds chuck roast
Onion, finely chopped
12-oz can of tomato, diced
6 garlic cloves, crushed
Salt and pepper to taste

Add everything to the slow cooker and cook on high for 4–6 hours.

TOLL-HOUSE-RECIPEThe Dessert

Take advantage of those “back of the package” recipes! You know the recipe on the Nestle Toll House chocolate chips to make cookies, or the Libby’s pumpkin pie recipe on the back of the pumpkin puree can? They always come out delicious and will save you loads of time.

The Cocktail

Every great host has a great drink to offer. We suggest you have a small variety of soda, wine, and beer, but then have one special cocktail! This will add to the conversation and pump up your guests’ energy. One of our favorites is Scandinavian “Glogg.” Here is the recipe:

One cup brandy or vodka
One bottle Burgundy or pinot noir
One bottle Port wine
About 1/2 a cup sugar (we suggest brown, but white is just as good!)
Cloves
One piece of ginger
Cinnamon sticks to garnish
One orange to garnish
Raisins to garnish

In a large pan over heat, add half a cup of water and the sugar, stir until sugar is dissolved. Lower the heat and add all your spices. Keep mixture at a simmer, do not let boil from this point forward. Add your wine and brandy or vodka. Sweeten and spice to taste. If needed, strain mixture. Serve hot right from the stove!
