How to Run a Business While Planning your Wedding

Planning on tying the knot while keeping your business afloat? It can get stressful…here’s how to do both Hot Boss Style.

As a serial entrepreneur with multiple businesses and mom of three, I recently decided to add “new bride” to that list on May 9th…and coordinating a wedding while managing my businesses was quite the challenge.

While I was ecstatic to finally say “I do” to my dream groom, when things got a little hectic (like our initial venue canceling our reservation date at the last minute), I had to re-evaluate how to organize my time to wear my CEO hat and my future wife hat.

If you’re a woman entrepreneur about to get married, here’s how to plan your wedding and run your business at the same time, a.k.a. Be a Hot Boss and handle your business no matter what!

5 Tips to Run Your Business While Planning Your Wedding

1. Write down all your to-dos and delegate them

You’ve heard the phrase: “Write it down and make it plain.”

Well, I say write it down and make a plan.

The first step in making sure your special day is everything you dreamed of is to make a to-do list for everything you need accomplished for your business while you plan your wedding.

Once you have a clear vision of your tasks, it’s time to delegate. Even if it’s with family and friends, make sure you don’t attempt to do it all alone as that’s an easy way to burnout and get nothing done (been there, done that, don’t recommend!).

Assign your wedding and business tasks that you either don’t have the time to do or don’t have the desire to do, and make sure you give them to people you trust are qualified to get it done.

2. Automate your business tasks where you can

Don’t delegate just to people—assign your computer tasks, too!

Automation is an essential business tool that helps you create systems and processes in your day-to-day workflow so you can get your tasks done faster.

For example, if one of your tasks is sending follow-up emails to clients (or even wedding vendors), create an email template and set up an automaton sequence to customize and send that email when needed. Gmail is great for this, as well as other automated tools like Honeybook.

If you haven’t assessed your business systems in a while, and you’re getting overwhelmed doing the work yourself, it’s likely time for a business audit.

When you audit your business systems, you make it easier to see which workflow processes are actually serving your productivity, versus hindering it, so you make a plan to automate those workflows to save more time and get your work done easier.

3. Create “focus times” to avoid burnout

Running a business can already demand a lot from you, whether it’s client management or taking the time to do your daily tasks that may take hours.

If you start to feel drained, exhausted, irritable, and downright miserable, it’s time to build a healthy routine that I like to call “focus times” to help you work when you’re happy and productive.

Here’s how to schedule your focus times:

  • Look at your calendar and choose the days you’ll dedicate to your wedding and your business. Make sure those days do not overlap—only work on wedding activities on wedding planning days and vice versa.
  • Build your focus time schedule that’s realistic to your capabilities. Think about what times you’re most productive (like mornings when your kids are at school or night when the day is winding down) and carve out the time you’ll need to work.
  • Don’t work outside of the hours you set or else you’ll risk burnout. If you schedule 3 hours to work on your to-do list, stick to 3 hours and save the rest for later.

4. Make the space for accountability check-ins

Everyone needs a little accountability to stay on track and stay motivated to get things done.

I recommend having weekly check-ins with your team, your family, and even yourself to ensure everyone is pulling their weight and staying on schedule.

A great way to keep everyone inspired to get tasks done is to celebrate the small wins. Have a team brunch party or take your wedding party planning committee on a girls night out.

5. Don’t forget to treat yourself

Self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.

In order to survive what is arguably the busiest season of your life (planning your wedding while running your business is no small feat), you need to take care of your mind, body, and soul.

I mentioned earlier how easy it is to burnout when you overwork yourself, but you can also burnout from not taking care of yourself inside and out.

Make the time you need to relax. Even if it’s just 20 minutes each day, use that time to treat yourself and yourself only. Get some cardio in, read a good book to learn something new, or plan a meetup with your best friends.

Wedding planning and running a business can be challenging, but it should still be fun. Take the time to smile, laugh, and enjoy yourself!
