Today we spotlight:

Meet Zoe, Cakes Fly Dyes

Have you always been into fashion?

I have kinda been into fashion.  I love picking out outfits with my mom and dressing like a rainbow, even though it drives her crazy.

What inspired you to create Zoe Cakes Fly Dye and become a kidpreneur?

When I was 6 years old my parents bought me a tie dye kit and we tie dyed everything we could find..t shirts, tank tops, socks and even pajamas.  I had so much fun doing it and loved how it looked when it was finished.  I also wanted to find a way to make money to go to Japan.  So, after tie dying for a couple weeks I asked my parents if they thought people would buy the stuff I made and they said maybe.  So I said I wanted to start a tie dye business and they said let’s do it!

Upon starting your company what was your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenges when I first started Zoe Cakes Fly Dyes were not spilling dye all over the kitchen or myself or my mom.  It was also challenging learning how to fold the patterns neatly on my own.  At first I had a hard time focusing and getting orders done because I wanted to play and dance and sing, but now I know how to focus better and I still get a dance break in between.

Did you take any business courses or training before starting Zoe Cakes Fly Dye and becoming a kidpreneur?

I didn’t have any training or take courses on how to start a business, we just did it and are learning more and more as we go.

How do you come up with your designs?

I experiment and use my imagination to come up with designs.  Sometimes they come out really nice and some just don’t work out.  My mom, grandma and I also watch youtube and tiktok videos to see if we see any interesting designs.

Are your parents influential in your business?

Yes my parents are very influential in my business.  I couldn’t do it without them!  In the beginning they did a lot of work taking orders, setting up social media and stuff like that.  Now I make my own edits for my instagram and tiktok posts. My mom still helps with taking orders but I’ve been practicing and getting better at doing it on my own.  Mom says it’s important to know every part of the business so we talk about dyes, designs, marketing, customer service, inventory and all the other important things.

Name a celebrity you would love to see wearing your clothes?

I would love to see Raven Symone, Isaac Ryan Brown & Sky Katz or any of the characters on the Disney Channel wearing Zoe Cakes Fly Dyes. Also Addison Rae and Charli D’Amelio from Tiktok and Pressley from Dance Moms. My mom also always tells me that Teyana Taylor has dope style so it would make her happy to see Teyana in Fly Dyes too.

How do you balance being an entrepreneur and being a kid?

Balancing being an entrepreneur and a kid has been really hard to be honest because I am still a kid who likes to play on the computer and talk with my friends.  I try to set certain days when I spend a couple of hours doing Fly Dyes.  I have a playlist with my favorite songs and I will play them while I’m working and that way I can get some dance breaks in.  Dance breaks are really important and help me get my wiggles out so that I can focus again.

Who is Zoe Cakes Fly Dye ideal customer?

My ideal customer is someone who is stylish, likes color and likes to dress fun.

What advice do you give other kids who want to start a business and become a kidpreneur?

The advice I would give to kids who want to start a business would be to make sure it’s something that you love. Love to do and to make sure your parents have your back and to just give it a try you know never what will happen.

How do you use social media to promote your business?

I post edits of my color matching, my Fly Dye products, my customers wearing their Fly Dyes and sometimes of myself working on my social media to give everyone a look at what I do.

What are your short and long term goals?

My short term goal is to work hard and earn enough to go on vacation to California.  My long term goal is for everyone to know and love Zoe Cakes Fly Dyes and to one day expand the business to be more than tie dye products.

Who is your inspiration?

My family is my inspiration because they support me in everything that I do.
