Passion Makes Perfect

NSYNHer name hints at her knack for alluring her readers with desirable stories. I want to introduce you guys to N’Tyse, author of My Secrets, Your Lies and her latest novel, Twisted Entrapment. She was able to turn her gift and passion for writing into a successful career. With so many projects, books, and experiences under her belt, it’s hard to believe she’s just getting started. This is a writer whose work you should definitely get acquainted with because her love for stories and her writing style are going to take her to the top. Check out what she had to say about her inspiration, advice about self-publishing, and adapting her books to film.

What inspired you to begin writing?

I actually had a great deal of inspiration around me when I decided to answer the call to write. Being that I was a fan of urban fiction, I decided to challenge myself to write stories that reflected my reality and the reality of those dear to me. Writing was also therapeutic and a major part of my healing process after suffering a series of miscarriages.

I read on your website that you’re currently in school for Creative Writing and Film. You’re also experienced in filmmaking. What are the main differences you have faced in the creative process for films versus books?

My experience behind the camera was in making my first independent film, Beneath My Skin, which is a documentary that delves into the lives of Czar, Jazzmine, Myesha, and Nymfo. They share their coming out stories, internal struggles, and daily experiences as African American lesbians in today’s society. A mother also shares her reaction to when her daughter first came out to her. Given that my first film was a documentary and unscripted, I didn’t have to focus too much on the creative aspect as I do when churning out novels. I do look forward, though, to completing my script(s) based on my book(s).

In 2007, you self-published your novel My Secrets, Your Lies. Since then you’ve had other books published through multiple publishers including Zane and Simon and Schuster. What are the main differences between self-publishing and going through a publishing company?

Self-publishing allows for the author to reserve all their rights and maintain full creative control of their project. It also requires the author to invest monetarily in the production, packaging, and distribution. When working with a respectable publisher, there are no upfront costs or fees. The publisher finances the entire project and will assign a release date usually twelve months out. The biggest plus to working with a publisher is that the author doesn’t have to manage the tedious process that goes along with publishing a book. They can focus on what they love most―writing!

Have you faced critics who did not understand your writing style? If so, how do you respond or face people who simply do not understand you as a writer?

Fortunately, I haven’t had to deal with that with any of my Twisted novels. However, I did experience some criticism with my first book, My Secrets, Your Lies, and its sequel. Considering the taboo subject matter and how racy the book is, I found myself defending my writing and my characters in several situations. That was eight years ago. I have since learned that I don’t have to do that. I’m aware that my writing isn’t for everyone and I can respect a critic’s perspective without having to discount or hold a debate about my writing style or the genre(s) I write in. I will never be ashamed of the authenticity of my creative expression.      11800055_10205997091840673_8854555451433135587_n

What’s your number one goal, pertaining to your career, that you haven’t reached yet?

To have my Twisted series adapted for film or television. Or any of my novels, for that matter.

Do you have any future projects or books coming out soon that you would like to let our readers know about?

Yes ma’am! My latest novel, Twisted Entrapment, drops 7/21/15. It is the third, and most anticipated, installment in the Twisted series. The Beneath My Skin DVD is also available.
