There aren’t that many TV shows that center today’s modern moms. TV is awash with reality shows, sitcoms and teen dramas about young hip women with endless energy and no kids. While it’s great to see women from all walks of life on the screen, sometimes it’s nice to sit back and watch characters you can actually relate to. Thousands of shows have mothers, but only a handful have honest portrayals of motherhood as the focus.
Don’t worry, we’ve done the research so you don’t have to.
Here are the top 3 TV shows about Modern Moms
1. Workin’ Moms
Workin’ Moms is a Canadian slice-of-life TV drama which follows a group of four friends in their thirties all navigating early motherhood. It displays the harsh realities of parenting that most daytime TV shies away from, while still highlighting the beautiful moments with a comedic touch. From pumping breastmilk in an office bathroom to dealing with mental health and tumultuous marriages, this show will have you nodding along to the highs and lows of figuring out life and motherhood.
The good news is that you can binge-watch the entire thing on Netflix if you want to. The seventh and final season will be coming to Netflix this spring. If you start season one now, you’ll catch the last season just in time.

2. Mom
If you’ve heard about any show on this list, it’s probably this one. This hit American CBS sitcom follows Christy Plunkett (played by Anna Faris), a single mother on a journey to become sober and reconnect with her estranged mother, Bonnie (Allison Janney). The best part of this show is that it addresses motherhood across generations, with Christy’s relationship with her two kids as well as with her own mother. The series tackles healing a cycle of dysfunction, addiction and teenage pregnancy in a family, which comes with a lot of pain but also a lot of love.
You can watch all 8 seasons of Mom on Hulu, Vudu, Google Play, iTunes or Amazon Prime Video.

3. Motherland
Across the pond, the BAFTA-winning sitcom Motherland might be the next on your to-watch list. Julia (Anna Maxwell Martin) is a career woman who suddenly finds herself thrust into a more present parenting role after her own mother stops looking after her two young children. She discovers the social hierarchy of mothers in her middle-class neighbourhood, with seemingly polished Amanda at the top of the food chain, and down-to-earth Liz and single dad Kevin at the bottom. Julia, who is far more at home at her job than wrestling kids to and from play dates, challenges the traditional notion of all mothers being born nurturers. Dry British humour is coupled with a few laugh-out-loud hijinks as we see parenting from a much more realistic and honest light.
You can catch the three seasons of Motherland on BBC iPlayer in the UK. In the US, you can watch broadcasts on Sundance TV or stream on AMC+, Apple TV, VUDU, Google Play and Amazon Prime Video.
