xoSelf (short for Love Yourself)) is a weekly advice series where women can anonymously seek advice on topics about relationships, work, finding themselves or life challenges. xoSelf is responded to by educator & life coach Dr. Walter Hidalgo.
Dear xoSelf: I am not an unhealthy eater, but I’m not the best. I love sweets. I can eat it all day (moderately of course). As I creep up in age, I would like to reduce my sweet intake to around one dessert per day. I hate diets, I feel restrictions would not work. What can I safely do to cut back?
Answer: Balance, moderation and self-control! There is nothing wrong with eating sweets. However, as the old saying goes: “Too much of anything is not good for you.” I recommend starting a diet and exercise that is realistic for you. Start light and build yourself up as you go. When you reach a milestone that is when you reward yourself (but not over indulge). This is where self-control comes in. When you balance this regimen and moderate your intake you look forward to both the results and the rewards.
