xoSelf: Lose 50 lbs or lose a fiance

xoSelf (short for Love Yourself)) is a weekly advice series where women can anonymously seek advice on topics about relationships, work, finding themselves or life challenges. xoSelf is responded to by educator & life coach Dr. Walter Hidalgo.

Dear xoSelf: My fiance said that I need to lose fifty pounds before our wedding next year or he will cancel it. I would like to lose a few pounds but not fifty and I feel that I should leave him because he is demanding something of me that I don’t agree with. Should I leave my fiance or lose weight?

Answer:

Relationships will constantly be tested. How you handle them will determine the longevity of your relationship. If this is something you both want (not what the other person wants) then each of you will support each other. If it’s happening only on a unilateral level then challenges will arise.  Afterall, there is no “I” in team!
